How to use custom hostnames

Haptic fully supports custom hostnames for all of your game servers.

Custom hostnames allow players to create unique and memorable server addresses that reflect their community. Instead of relying on generic server names or IP addresses (e.g. 35.233.173.148:7699), players can personalize their gaming experience by selecting a custom hostname that is easy to remember and share with others. Think - odin.vesta.haptic.game

Let's break it down:

  1. Hostname prefix - This is the first word of your hostname (odin.vesta.haptic.game) and it maps directly to an individual game instance. This word is customizable but must be unique for every game instance you create. You can change this on each game instance setting's page.

  2. Hostname root - This is the second word of your hostname (odin.vesta.haptic.game) and is account-wide. Customizing this will affect all current game instances you own. You can change this on your account page.

  3. Hostname domain - This is the last two words of the your hostname (odin.vesta.haptic.game) and is will be used for every server.

Custom hostnames not only enhance the social aspect of gaming, but they can also improve the overall gameplay experience by fostering a sense of community and providing a platform for players to connect and collaborate. With custom hostnames, players can take their gaming to the next level and create a space that truly feels like their own.

Note: Not all games support IPV6 or SRV records. This is a massive shame as this means you will have to connect to the server with a port at the end of your hostname (odin.vesta.haptic.game:7699). If you see a port at the end of your game's hostname when online, this is because that game does not support IPV6 or SRV records.

p.s. you may have noticed the hostname root (vesta) is the name of a famous asteroid. By default, we assign each account a random asteroid. Which one did you get?

The famous asteroid "Vesta" looks like an ugly space potato.
Vesta - An ugly space potato.
