A Terraria world is one file, <world name>.wld, in your Worlds folder (on Windows Documents\My Games\Terraria\Worlds). A tModLoader world is that file plus a .twld file with the same name, in Documents\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader\Worlds. Upload one world with Upload World on your server's Backups card: drop the .wld (and its .twld for a modded world) and the box zips it for you. Your characters stay on each player's PC.
Windows: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Worlds. tModLoader: ...\Terraria\tModLoader\Worlds. If your Documents folder is synced with OneDrive, make sure the files are downloaded to this PC (not cloud-only) before you upload them.
Steam Cloud: a world with a cloud icon in Terraria's world list lives in Steam Cloud. In Terraria, choose Move off cloud on it, and it moves to your Worlds folder.
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds (tModLoader: .../Terraria/tModLoader/Worlds).
Linux and Steam Deck: ~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds (tModLoader: .../Terraria/tModLoader/Worlds).
Android: Android/data/com.and.games505.TerrariaPaid/Worlds. Copy it to a PC first. iPhone and iPad: open Files, then On My iPhone, then Terraria, then Worlds.
Consoles: console worlds can't be copied off the console.
One world: its .wld file. The .wld.bak beside it is the save before the last one, and it can come along.
A tModLoader world: the .wld and the .twld together. The .twld holds every modded tile, chest item and NPC; without it the world loads without them.
A whole Worlds folder, or a whole My Games\Terraria folder, also works. We find the worlds at any depth. With several worlds we ask you which one to import, and the worlds of the loader your server runs are listed first. If the same world is in both folders, a tModLoader server takes the copy it can open, and a regular server takes the latest save.
A server folder whose serverconfig.txt names its world imports that world.
The world needs a Terraria version your server can open. tModLoader runs on Terraria 1.4.4, so a world saved by Terraria 1.4.5 can't go on a modded server. See Terraria: mods with tModLoader.
Your world's Difficulty (Classic, Expert, Master or Journey) is part of the world file. After an upload, the Difficulty setting on the Overview card's Details tab shows the world's own, so leave it as it is: changing Difficulty starts a new world.
Power down your server. Upload World is disabled while the server is running.
Open the Backups card and click Upload World.
Drop in the .wld (and its .twld), or a ZIP, RAR, 7Z, or TAR.GZ of your world, and confirm with Upload and replace world. Your previous world is saved first as Backup before world upload.
When the import finishes, press Start.

Character files (.plr): you uploaded the Players folder. Characters stay on each PC; upload the world from the Worlds folder instead.
The modded half of a tModLoader world: you uploaded Name.twld without Name.wld. Upload both together.
The Terraria game or server program: that is the install folder, not a world. Worlds are in the folders above.
A shortcut: a .lnk file only points at the world. Open the Worlds folder and upload the real file.
A server config file (serverconfig.txt): your server's settings are on its Overview card, so the config doesn't need uploading. Upload the world's .wld file instead; if the config names a world, the message names that file.
tModLoader mods (enabled.json or .tmod files): a world upload doesn't install mods. Add them on the Mods card, then upload the world's .wld and .twld.
Empty (0 bytes): the file has no data in it. Check that it has a size in your Worlds folder; if your Documents folder is synced with OneDrive, make sure the file is downloaded to this PC first, then upload it again.
Isn't a Terraria world file we can read: it is a renamed file, or a world copied while Terraria was saving. Close Terraria and copy it again. If its .wld.bak is good, we use that instead and tell you.
More than one world: pick one in the list, or upload one world on its own.
Your server card may show notes:
A tModLoader world on a regular server: it loads without its modded items, and once regular Terraria saves it, tModLoader can't open it. Add its mods on the Mods card first and upload again.
The mod list from your upload: add the same mods on the Mods card.
TShock's data: server-side characters, regions and warps don't come across.
A world file with .txt added to its name: we imported it under its real name.
If the server won't start and says "Terraria could not read the world save on this server", the world file is damaged: restore an earlier backup from Backups, then press Start. The server waits for you and doesn't keep retrying.
