ValheimGuideValheim only generates new content in unexplored areas. How to check your map, reach the Deep North, and what to do if your north is already explored.
Valheim only generates new content in parts of the map you have not explored yet. The Deep North biome arrives with Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026 at the far north of the world, so it appears in your existing world only if the northern edge is still covered by fog. Already mapped the north? The terrain there is locked in, and the biome cannot appear in it. Your options: sail to northern areas you have never revealed, or start a fresh world alongside or instead of this one.
Valheim builds the world as you uncover it and then treats what you have seen as permanent. That protects your bases: an update will never regenerate terrain under something you built. The cost is that new biomes and world features only take shape in unexplored territory. This is how Valheim itself works, on every server and in solo play alike.
Still need help?
Open your map and look at the far north.
Still fog up there? You are fine. After updating to 1.0, sail north into the fog and the Deep North generates as you arrive.
Partly explored? The biome will only appear in the sections you have never revealed. Aim your expedition at the gaps.
Fully mapped north? The Deep North cannot generate in this world. A fresh world is the way to experience it.
You do not have to abandon anything:
Reset on the same server. Your server's Reset World generates a new 1.0 world, and your old world stays available in your backups.
Run both. Add a second Valheim server on your plan's memory pool: keep the story world, explore 1.0 on the new one.
Characters survive either way. Valheim stores characters with each player, so skills and gear come along to any world.

Updated but seeing no new content anywhere? First make sure the server actually restarted onto 1.0: the update indicator on your server card disappears once it has. Friends failing to join with "Incompatible version" is the same story, one restart away. See Incompatible version after an update.
