Astroneer saves every 20 minutes on Haptic unless you change Autosave Interval (min) (1 to 60). Stopping or restarting the server from the dashboard, and going to sleep on Wake & Play, save the world first. We back the world up every time the server stops and once a day, and you can restore any backup from the Backups card.
How saving works
The game keeps the world in astro-saved/SaveGames as one file per save, named like SAVE_1$2026.10.20-20.23.08.savegame: the save's name, then the date and time it was written. Every save writes a new file and removes the previous one.
On a timer: every Autosave Interval (min) minutes (20 by default).
On Stop, Restart and Wake & Play sleep: Haptic asks the game to save and waits for it before the server goes down.
Before a backup: Haptic asks the game to save first, so the backup holds the world as it is right then.
A crash loses only what happened since the last save.
What we back up, and when
Every time the server stops, including restarts and Wake & Play sleeps.
Once a day while the server is running.
On demand. Take one yourself from the Backups card before a risky change, such as a new mod or removing one.
Each backup holds your save, your server settings file and your player roles as they were at that moment. Backups live in cloud storage, outside the server.
Restore an earlier version
Stop the server.
Open the Backups card and pick the backup from before the change you want to undo.
Restore it. A backup of the world as it is now is taken first, so the restore can be undone too.
Start the server. Friends join exactly as before.
Choose which save loads
Active Save in your server settings names the save the server loads, for example SAVE_1. Leave it blank to keep the save the server used last. If no save has the name you typed, the server loads the newest save instead; with no saves at all it starts a new world.
Start a new world
Use Reset World on the Backups card. It deletes the saves only: your server settings, player roles and mods stay. Take a backup first if you might want the old world back.
